Cheap Bangkok Airfare - English Teacher Fights to Carry Concealed Weapon to School
By Pamela Mortimer
Save for certain exceptions, oregon does not ban its residents from taking guns into public buildings. Stating that it is unlawful because it violates her second amendment rights, katz is challenging the ban. The school district has banned weapons from the high school campus. The teacher also claims to have fear about a Columbine-style attack. Gerry Katz, says she needs a pistol to protect her from estranged husband, 44, katz. Is fighting for the right to carry a concealed weapon onto the school campus, oregon, a teacher at South Medford High School in Medford, shirley Katz.
" Either, and I am not going to let the school board bully me. I refuse to let my ex-husband bully me. "I have that (concealed weapons) permit. " said Katz in a statement at her home, "This is primarily about my Second Amendment right and Oregon law and the simple fact that I know it is my right to carry that gun.
The permits can be granted by a sheriff. Obtaining a concealed weapons permit in Oregon is not difficult for anyone who has a clean criminal record and completes a gun safety course.
It's unclear if special weapons permits offer an exemption from the ban. According to the National Council of State Legislatures, prohibit anyone from taking guns to school, along with the District of Columbia, thirty-eight states, although Oregon is not among them.
On Thursday. The safety factor will be the basis of the school district?s argument at a hearing scheduled for 2 P.M. South Medford High School Superintendent Phil Long insists employees and students are safer without guns on campus.
And she would be armed and ready, katz says she would be sure students were locked away safely and out of the line of fire. The teacher is known to practice with it regularly and has thought about what action she would take should she ever have to confront a gunman, however. Katz wouldn?t reveal whether she has ever taken a gun to school.
" We can't just acquiesce as we have been taught to do, shootings at Virginia Tech University and the one-room Amish school in Pennsylvania "reinforced my belief we have to take action. " she said, and that is not acceptable anymore, and do whatever they say, you try to avoid eye contact, "Our safety plan at our school now is that if somebody threatening comes in.
From Atlanta to a rural stead in the foothills of the Cascade Range, commercial photographer Gerry Katz, katz never owned a gun until she moved with her now estranged husband.
" she said, we just felt we needed to have a gun here for personal safety, "Being out in the country.
Gerry Katz denies the allegation. Shirley Katz said she bought the pistol in 2004 after Gerry Katz allegedly grabbed her by the throat and threatened to kill her.
Gerry Katz is convinced that his estranged wife?s desire to take her gun to school is really about an attempt to get sole custody of their 6-year-old daughter, in fact.
" I have no desire to hurt her. I am not a threat to her. I am not coming to your school. . . I called the principal at her high school and told her. . . "As soon as this thing started. " he said, "She's just scamming everybody.
Especially since they aren?t allowed to bring their own scissors, others say they are uncomfortable with the idea of a teacher carrying a gun to school. Some South Medford students have been transferred from Katz?s class due to the controversy.
" 000 other people, "But I don't agree she should bring her problems around 2. A junior, 16, " said Lauren Forderer, "I totally understand she wants to protect herself.
She may not bring the gun to school, katz said, even if she wins.
" "So I feel like my carrying concealed on campus now sets me up as a target. " Katz said, "The whole point of carrying concealed is no one should know you're carrying.
